Crafting Memories

DIY Nightgowns with My Mom and Daughters

Growing up, my mom was always so crafty. Whether it was sewing, making photo albums, or creating something out of nothing, she could do it all. Now that my daughters are old enough to enjoy crafting, it feels like coming full circle to share these moments with them. Recently, we embarked on a simple yet meaningful project: making DIY nightgowns together. It was an idea my mom came up with, and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

It all started when the girls only wanted to sleep in their store-bought nightgowns. My mom, ever the innovator, said, “Why don’t we make some ourselves?” She took a trip to Fabricland and came back with fabric treasures from the discard bins. Each piece was just enough for a nightgown or a sleep sack, and the cost was minimal. The best part? The kids got to be part of every step of the process. She also picked up fabric paint and we let the girls loose on one of their nightgowns—they are abstract at best… but boy did they have fun!

Here’s How We Did It:

  1. Choosing Fabrics: The girls dove into the colorful pile and picked out their favorites. It was heartwarming to see their excitement and creativity shine through.

  2. Measuring and Folding: We folded the fabric in half and held it up to their shoulders to measure the right length. This step was quick and easy, with lots of giggles along the way.

  3. Cutting and Tying: Next, we cut strips along the sides of the fabric and tied them into knots to form the seams. The kids were amazed at how such a simple method could create something wearable.

  4. Shaping the Neckline: For the neckline, we cut a small half-oval at the top and a straight line down the front. This allowed the nightgowns to slip on easily.

  5. Fitting and Adjusting: Finally, we tried them on the girls to make sure they fit—and they were perfect! The smiles on their faces said it all.

For the sleep sack, we followed the same no-sew method, adding ties in place of a zipper. It was functional, adorable, and entirely handmade.

More Than Just a Craft

The girls were thrilled to wear their nightgowns and have been playing in them ever since. But beyond the project itself, what truly made this experience special was the time spent together. My mom, the girls’ beloved “BGE”, led the charge with her creativity and patience. Seeing the bond between her and my daughters grow through this activity was priceless.

I’m so grateful for these moments and the memories we’re creating as a family. Crafting isn’t just about making something tangible; it’s about fostering connections, passing down traditions, and celebrating the joy of creating together.
